As part of the BE PART (Art BEyond PARTicipation) international project,
Scottish artists Neil Callaghan and Simone Kenyon are spending six weeks
in Aizpute, Western Latvia creating an audio work with local people from
across generations.
Responding to and working within Misiņkalna parka estrāde where the woodland meets
the remnants of an outdoor theatre space. This is a contemplative work
that explores how we individually experience place and what we can learn
from other perceptions, ways of seeing and imagining. BE PART is an international organisational development project in the field of participatory art practices, that the New theatre Institute of Latvia is part of.

Audio will be available for audience to stream from their own smart phones, bring your own
headphones.
Mp3 players and headphones will also be available on site.
Access – the main site is accessible by car.
The event consists of a journey across a track, a large tarmac area and narrow paths
though rough ground and grass.

Vidzemes Market, Festival Hub, Riga
In Vidzemes Market, the audio work will be available. The artists will introduce the project, their creative process and their experience as visiting artists-parents working internationally. This will lead into a wider group discussion about participatory art practices.
To ensure the safety of our audience, artists and team, the attendance of the festival in person will only be possible when presenting a Covid-19 certificate that proves the fact of vaccination or recovery from the illness within the past six months and an identity document. Therefore, unfortunately, the festival may only be attended by persons 12 and up this year.

About artist
Neil Callaghan & Simone Kenyon have been in an ongoing partnership since 2006. Their work moves between dance, visual art and performance, and takes place in conventional theatres and galleries as well as specific sites and journeys through landscapes. At the heart of their work is a deep interest in the physical experience of the audience and place. The artists invite audiences to engage in the heightened perception of a shared moment and explore their surroundings in new and surprising ways, or witness delicate and risky situations in performative environments. Their work has previously been shown Internationally and across the UK at Hayward Gallery, Sadlers Wells, Somerset House, Hepworth Gallery, amongst others. Their curation of the Distance Festival alongside Joon Lynn Goh in 2010 brought them to Riga to present the programme within the Homo Novus festival.
